Lesson Summary
Have you ever heard of Doctors on Demand? This lesson uses Google Hangout for students to play the role of doctor as well as the role of patient. The students learn about various body systems during class lessons. Then, students select a disease to research and create a scenario for their virtual/online doctor to diagnose. Student small groups take turns presenting their scenarios as patients and also listening to other scenarios as “virtual” doctors. Using Google Hangout provides the opportunity to expand the lesson to talk to a “virtual” student doctor from a partner Health and PE class. Students also complete 2nd opinion documents allowing all students the opportunity to diagnose a “patient illness” should the virtual doctor misdiagnose their patient.
TIPC Ratings
Research & Information Fluency
Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Students used databases and search techniques to find specific information related to their selected illness. They organized the information into a succinct description of the illness to present to their student doctor. Additionally, all students recorded notes from the Google hangout and used the patient descriptions to determine clues about the illness that could be used to research and diagnose the illness.
Communication & Collaboration
Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Students selected a partner or partners to work with using collaborative tools. Small groups worked together to research the illness and compile their information on a shared GoogleDoc. The teams work together to draft a script describing the illness with enough clues to help the doctor but not give the identity of the illness away easily.
Critical Thinking & Problem Solving
Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Student doctors needed to identify the illness their patient had using the online health history form and the patient description provided during the GoogleHangout. Student doctors also created three questions for their patient to help gain a better understanding of the symptoms of the illness. Other students in the classes took notes during the GoogleHangout and used those clues and symptoms to diagnose the patient.
Creativity & Innovation
Rating: Developing – Explanation: Student patients organized the information and symptoms about their illness into a succinct and creative description of the illness to present to their student doctor.
