Lesson Summary
Fifth grade students in Mrs. Greenday’s class spent several weeks researching and creating 3D models of the ocean floor. Students participated in various classroom activities to master their ocean concepts and standards. After they had established their prior knowledge, they began designing 3D models of the ocean floor. Students were instructed to create a model that included 5 parts of the ocean floor with labels. After their designs were complete we used the UP Mini 3D printer to print each student their model of the ocean floor.
TIPC Ratings
Research & Information Fluency
Rating:Approaching – Explanation: Students spent time in class researching and mastering their ocean standards. Resources such as Nearpod, Discovering Science and BoardMaker were used to master these skills.
Communication & Collaboration
Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Students worked together to tackle the manipulations that Tinkercad offers. Moving, stacking and slicing parts of their ocean floor proved to be a difficult task. The students became peer assistants and were able to help talk and show their peers how to manipulate the shapes in Tinkercad.
Critical Thinking & Problem Solving
Rating: Ideal – Explanation: Tinkercad proved to be a problem solving program in and of itself. Students spent countless hours manipulating the shapes and attempting to make their models just right.
Creativity & Innovation
Rating: Ideal – Explanation: This was an open ended assignment where their only instruction was to make sure their ocean model had at least four parts with labels. These students innovation and creativity astounded us. Their ocean floor models exceeded our expectations and their mastery of Tinkercad truly blew our minds as adults.
