Lesson Summary
Kindergarten students in Patricia Gregory’s class, at Carver Elementary, took their research to the next level. Mrs. Gregory’s friends collaborated with their school librarian and ITRT to complete this project. The students began by selecting an Awesome American to research. Students were given a graphic organizer and spent time researching with our HCPS database PebbleGo. After researching they became authors of their own biographies. Mrs. Gregory spent time working with the students on their rough drafts. After their biography was ready for publication the students use a second HCPS resource, Britannica Image Quest, to locate pictures for their biographies. Students used various iPad apps to create their own digital books. When their final copy was published we attached their creations to QR codes so their classmates could spend time looking at their peers finished products.

In the future we would push for more collaboration between the students.
Critical Thinking & Problem Solving
Rating: Entry – Explanation: This element was not focused heavily on during this project. When the kids were working on their sloppy copy they did star what they considered to be the most important fact. This was noticed and addressed in some of the students work.
Creativity & Innovation
Rating: Ideal – Explanation: Students were given a blank canvas when it came to producing their digital book. Students were only directed to use specific apps. They illustrated their book cover using Doodle Buddy, used images from an online database and designed their book’s appearance to their liking within Book Creator. Lots of different colors, fonts and designs were used in their books.
