Lesson Summary

Second grade students in Ms. Gabrual’s class were curious about different animals located around the world. Students researched animals in specific continents. They were tasked to describe the animals’ habitat including food, water, and shelter, adaptations, body coverings and how they move. Students then created a presentation using either Google Slides or Pixie to tell many important facts about their animals’ habitat.

Rating:Ideal – Explanation: Students used a variety of research engines to gain information on their animal continent. The students helped in the development of their research questions. They completed a specific animal research graphic organizer to complete the project. The students then took the knowledge gained from research and created an open ended product.

Communication & Collaboration

Rating: Ideal – Explanation: Students collaborated about their animals found in the same continent. The students used their communication and collaboration skills to come together and collaborate on a presentation to share with a real world audience. These students used the power of Google Drive and Google Slides to collaborate with one another regardless of time or distance. They combined their projects after learning about a variety of animals and presented it to the first grade classes and fifth grade class. When the projects were completed, students from other groups provided them with feedback. The students also reflected on the process at the end of the project.

Critical Thinking & Problem Solving

Rating: Ideal – Explanation: Students were asked higher level questions and applied their research information to their answers. Students were asked to think about how these animals would survive in a different continent. Throughout the project the students had make decisions as a team and justify their decision making. They were provided an opportunity for self reflection and asked questions about how they would change their projects.

Creativity & Innovation

Rating: Ideal – Explanation: Students were provided with many choices to complete their presentations. They could present their information in Pixie or Google Slide. They included questions, pictures, and fun facts in their slides. The students created meaningful and original work using their newly acquired knowledge. The students reflected on the process at the end of the lesson to help further guide their creativity and innovation.
