Lesson Summary

Students investigate high schools in Spanish-speaking countries by analyzing their web pages. Students then develop, with a partner, their own school, complete with a web page that includes basic information (name, location, mascot, colors), school rules, extracurricular activities, and a page for Senior Superlatives.

Rating:Approaching – Explanation: The teacher tasks the students with opening a new school in Mexico. In order to set up a successful school, students must research existing schools and compare and contrast them with their American schools. Using the data from their school comparisons, students create a webpage to showcase their newly created school. Students choose any software to create their website. The school must meet the needs of the community.

Communication & Collaboration

Rating: Approaching – Explanation: This project is designed to promote collaboration within and beyond the classroom (website) to address the creation of a school. Students form their own groups and hold each other accountable for meeting deadlines and maintaining the grammatical/cultural integrity of the website. Students collectively determine the important information to be put on the website based on their prior research.

Critical Thinking & Problem Solving

Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Teacher provides an overview of the power gained from using a website to promote the creation of their new school. Students are required to address an authentic task: creating a new school abroad. Students apply digital tools to think critically and solve the open-ended authentic task of creating a school. Students need to justify their decisions of site content with their teammate.

Creativity & Innovation

Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Using the guiding question, the teacher guides students to investigate on their own, choose their content and the appropriate technology to display their content in a meaningful and purposeful manner. Students use up-to-date content to create an original and meaningful website for their school abroad.
