Lesson Summary

Today, politics and social media seems to be charged with cries of “fake news,” a lot of which follows (in a modern way) the tricks of Yellow Journalism. Students previously read an article about the Spanish-American War and learned about Yellow Journalism techniques. For this project, students were tasked with creating a “yellow journalism” or “fake news” story about Tucker High school. They used a variety of multimedia presentation resources including Canva, Moviemaker, and Google Sites.

Rating:Entry – Explanation: Students began this unit of study by reading this article about The Spanish-American War. As a class they discussed “yellow journalism” techniques. Then students read this Scholastic article about “fake news”.

Communication & Collaboration

Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Students worked individually or in groups of 2 or 3. They were given a demonstration on how to use a variety of multimedia presentation resources by the ITRT. They were able to choose one of these resources or another resource of their choosing that would suit the needs of their “fake news” article, movie, poster, etc. When using programs such as Canva, Adobe Spark, and Google Sites, they were able to collaborate outside the classroom.

Critical Thinking & Problem Solving

Rating: Developing – Explanation: Students had to analyze “yellow journalism” techniques in order to apply those written and visual techniques to their own “fake news” story about their school. For example, on their article/movie/poster, students would write the headline in huge print with strong language and often misleading. They would use lavish pictures, fake interviews, and false learning from so-called experts. And, they would display dramatic sympathy with the “underdog” against the system.

Creativity & Innovation

Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Students had to choose the best method to display their “fake news” story. They were very creative in their methods of “yellow journalism”. They used a variety of fonts and text sizes as well as visual images in their attempt to sway the public.
