Gaming the Greek Geeks and Gods

Summary

Students always want to have fun. Games are one way to have fun. In this lesson, the learning is put in the student’s hands. Working in groups, students create a board game using information from Greek Geeks. Student games can be physical board games or digital board games.

Research & Information Fluency

Rating: Ideal – Explanation: Students used in-class resources, as well as their own research efforts, to synthesize information that was assembled in a format appropriate for their game design.

Communication & Collaboration

Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Students formed groups and utilized Google Drive to communicate while they researched and developed their game. Designing took place during class while students were together as well as on their own time while students were not in the same location.

Critical Thinking & Problem Solving

Rating: Ideal – Explanation: Students made decisions about how to design their game and rules to work appropriately. This particular group of students (example from artifact links above) demonstrates the amount of critical thinking and problem-solving students can do in order to create a digital game. The creation of this game presented an authentic task that students took ownership of to complete their project.

Creativity & Innovation

Rating: Ideal – Explanation: Students created a completely new game based on their knowledge of content as well as game design. They created characters as well as a story line. Even the packaging of the game was distinctive. They went beyond the expectations of the assignment to create something unique and innovative.
