Summary
Henrico History impacts us in many ways igniting the passion within our students. Students researched and created brochures, timelines, blogs and informative videos about the people, places and events in our own backyard. Through online, book research, virtual and physical field trips, students made connections that impact the area in which we live. Students shared artifacts, experiences and informed us of where Henrico County began and where it is today as we know it. This allowed the students to reflect back upon the what Henrico once was and not just an area where to can buy the newest pair of converse or meet up with friends at the closest Starbucks.

Research & Information Fluency
Rating: Ideal – Explanation: In the 21st Century classroom, students find, navigate through, and evaluate large amounts of information. The teacher provided guided and independent research opportunities for students to make informed, ethical decisions and create products.
Students use a variety of tools and resources to research about an event, place or person in Henrico County and the impact it made on the current Henrico area. The student assembled and synthesized information to address the information gathered from research. Students used tools to powerfully display and interact with information researched and informed the public in a variety of ways.
Communication & Collaboration
Rating: Ideal – Explanation: Students communicated and collaborated ethically and effectively to create a product. Students chose to work within a group or on their own. Students had to collaborate and plan when and how to work together to gather research and on their final product. Students selected appropriate digital tools to communicate and collaborate with peers and the community to make all aware of the impact of Henrico County’s past had on its future. Students chose among the options that best suited their passion each of them had about Henrico County.
Critical Thinking & Problem Solving
Rating: Ideal – Explanation: The teacher facilitates and formatively assesses authentic tasks where students are engaged in meaningful questioning, critical thinking and problem solving. EVALUATE, SYNTHESIZE, or ANALYZE ( Name it- Claim It – Sustain it)

How can we leverage what we learn about our history to spark our interests in our roles as Henrico County citizens?

The students selected the most appropriate digital tools, as well as questioning, critical thinking and problem solving strategies to solve authentic tasks about Henrico County and the students ‘ own passions. The students reflected on their roles as critical thinkers and/or problems solvers and set goals for how their final products would best be suited to inform their peers and the general public about the information that was researched, synthesized, evaluated by the student.
Creativity & Innovation
Rating: Ideal – Explanation: The teacher develops, facilitates and assesses a learning environment where students are engaged in creativity and innovation. This is done by providing opportunities in and out of the classroom where students may go out and visit places where events or people made big decision or using artifacts to create a blog to share their own passions with the community. Students synthesize existing and self-generated knowledge to create new ideas and products within and beyond assignment parameters. The artifact that is provided by the student went beyond the expectation given and created a backdrop, script and costumes to allow all who watched her presentation to be transported with her four main Henrico County people as they each dealt with the war that was happening in their own backyard.
