This lesson is for : Grade 2:
Summary
This lesson is designed to support a school who participates in the Mind Up curriculum. The students will be introduced to and will investigate the location and functions of four major parts of the brain: the Prefrontal Cortex, Amygdala, Hippocampus and Dendrites. They will then work together using augmented reality along with a variety of different applications to create a video describing the different parts of the brain and their functions. The purpose of the video is to share the information with staff and students within school along with the founder of the Mind Up Program, Goldie Hawn.
TIPC Ratings
Research & Information Fluency
Rating: Developing – Explanation: Students were directly instructed on research techniques and analysis of various sources. Then students applied their research skills as they collected information about their part of the brain they chose for this project.
Communication & Collaboration
Rating: Ideal – Explanation: Communication and collaboration were exercised throughout this entire project. Students worked in partners to research and create a digital video about the part of the brain they chose to study. The class worked collectively to create a collaborative class video that was shared with the MindUp community.
Critical Thinking & Problem Solving
Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Students had to apply digital tools to think critically about the functions of the different parts of the brain. Using the virtual reality app, Augmenter, students used their new knowledge to dissect the brain to find the part they were responsible for researching. They embedded an image of their findings into a digital app of their choice to create an informative movie clip that was added to the class’ collaborative class movie: The Brain Experience.
Creativity & Innovation
Rating: Ideal – Explanation: This entire project was student led and authentic. Students used the knowledge gained about the part of the brain they chose to research to create a digital depiction of the jobs and functions of that specific part of the brain. Students came up with their own way to showcase their learning while figuring out a creative way to reach their audience. Students reflected on their role as a learner/innovator and set goals for future growth.
