Summary
Clarence Darrow once said, “History repeats itself, and that’s one of the things that’s wrong with history.” After researching the sociological factors that influenced the escalation of the Holocaust and current examples of intolerance in the world, students are charged with representing various global organizations to educate citizens about how to eradicate intolerance.

Rating: Ideal – Explanation: This lesson fits into the ideal/target category for research and information fluency. Students are required to research and then synthesize information for the authentic and open-ended assignment. Students are required to generate their own questions to guide their research, choose how to research the information, and share it collaboratively with their peers. Students are required to cite their sources in MLA format.
Communication & Collaboration
Rating: Ideal – Explanation: This lesson fits into the ideal/target category for communication and collaboration. Students self-selected presentation groups based on a strength/weakness survey that was given at the beginning of the lesson to ensure that all groups were well-rounded. Students then moved into research groups based on their role within their presentation groups. Students were required to select appropriate digital tools to communicate with each other both in their research and presentation groups. At the end of the lesson, they reflected on their roles as communicators and collaborators.
Critical Thinking & Problem Solving
Rating: Ideal – Explanation: This lesson fits into the ideal/target category critical thinking and problem solving. Students are given an authentic task that does not have a definite answer. They must synthesize background knowledge along with information gained during research to explain to others how we can keep history from repeating itself. Students must choose the best digital tool to share their information along with choosing which information was the most beneficial to present to their audience. They reflected on their roles as critical thinkers and problem solvers in order to grow.
Creativity & Innovation
Rating: Ideal – Explanation: This lesson falls into the ideal/target category for creativity and innovation. Students are required to synthesize existing and self-generated knowledge to explain how we can keep history from repeating itself. They put this information into a creative product of their choice to inform and persuade other people. Since the nature of the task was both authentic and open-ended, students are able to see how this applies beyond this assignment and can be used in various instances throughout life. Students reflected on their roles as innovators to help them with future projects.
