This lesson is for : Grade 4:

Summary

BRRRR! We challenge you to take up the cause of raising awareness for ALS by taking part in the Ice Bucket Challenge. Why should you AND your students dump ice, cold water on your heads? Do you want to increase compassion in your students? Would you like your students to gain appreciation for their physical well-being while learning valuable research skills? Through this project your students will read, research, write, and apply their new knowledge in a digital format of their choice while having fun working with their classmates to raise awareness in the community.

TIPC Ratings

Research & Information Fluency

Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Students first generated questions to guide their research. Using a search engine of their choice, students researched any and all information related to ALS and Lou Gehrig. Information needed to be synthesized and organized in order to address the Padlet questions generated by other students at another school as well as authentic task of creating an informative presentation to help raise awareness for ALS.

Communication & Collaboration

Rating: Ideal – Explanation: Communication and collaborative occurred throughout this entire project. Students collaborated with their peers when generating and responding to questions on the Padlet walls, reaching out to Home Depot for donations, working together to pull off THE ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE as well as asking for parent involvement, sending a different Padlet wall to students at another school, working in groups to create a presentation to raise awareness and finally posting their presentations on the class blog for the community/world to see. Through the Google Form, students were able to reflect on their roles as communicators and collaborators and set goals for future growth.

Critical Thinking & Problem Solving

Rating: Developing – Explanation: Students learned all about the “meaning” behind the Ice Bucket Challenge and wanted to come up with another way aside from the Ice Bucket Challenge to raise awareness for ALS. After intense research, the class used a variety of digital tools to create presentations that would address their need to further raise awareness.

Creativity & Innovation

Rating: Approaching – Explanation: Students had to synthesize information they researched about ALS and come up with a new way to raise awareness aside from their Ice Bucket Challenge. They had three choices to choose from for the best digital tool that would help convey their information and message.
