Summary
Students learn about the Holocaust and events important to WWII through reading the play, The Diary of Anne Frank. After reviewing the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum website, students are given a research assignment where they are to spend time researching the story of a Holocaust survivor and write an essay telling their story. The research and writing a survivor’s story is then combined with artwork they create using can tabs in some form.

Rating: Developing – Explanation: Students are given time to research using websites provided by the teacher.
Communication & Collaboration
Rating: Developing – Explanation: Students will communicate their findings when their artwork is presented in class and their essay is read aloud. Collaboration will take place with a few students on the 3rd day with those that help each other out with their artwork.
Critical Thinking & Problem Solving
Rating: Ideal – Explanation: Students will see the importance of learning about history and making the connection to present day by associating a common object (can tabs) as a visual reminder of the past and remember them in the present.
Creativity & Innovation
Rating: Ideal – Explanation: Students are permitted to choose and create any form of art they’d like as long as the can tabs are incorporated somehow in their piece.
