Who Should Do the Dishes? An Exploration of Children’s Views on Gender Roles – 8130

Summary

Students will interview students in grades K, 2 and 4 on gender roles in the household to get a sense of what type of gender stereotyping they are being exposed to.

Students were given the opportunity to synthesize resources in approaching the task and received support from both the teacher and the librarian in acquiring, evaluating and applying the information they gathered from the gender interviews.

The challenge promoted collaboration outside the boundaries of the classroom. They were encouraged to take the task further, work as a group and were given freedom in how to finish a final video.

The task was designed for students to reach conclusions about gender roles in the family, with the teacher and librarian as the support system.

Students stepped outside of their comfort zone in visiting another school and interviewing young children. They were given the opportunity to use what they learned from the interviews to reach critical conclusions.
