Holocaust ID Cards – #7760

Summary

This lesson was developed based on student inquiry into the authentic Identification Cards from the United States Holocaust Museum.  Students were so interested in learning about survivors and victims, I wanted to give them a chance to get personally involved in knowing their stories.

TIPC Ratings

Ideal – Students used a variety of resources that students evaluated for accuracy to complete research about the Holocaust survivor group they selected. Student teams composed their own questions to drive their research and they assembled their information on a digital graphic organizer.

Ideal – Students worked in self-selected groups to research and create a digital ID card to represent a holocaust survivor group of their choice. Google presentations and documents were used to facilitate collaboration and each ID card was a collaboratively created, digital representation of the unique experiences and perspectives embodied in the varied holocaust survivor groups.

Ideal – Students sought out personally relevant, candid accounts of their holocaust survivor groups by using the critical conversation digital tool, which helped students read between the lines in the accounts they discovered in their research. Each time groups documented their critical conversations increasingly more complex and informed research questions were developed.

Approaching – Students worked collaboratively to synthesize their research by creating unique, digital ID cards to represent the histories and views of various holocaust survivor groups. While compiling their research, students analyzed data on their group, seeking commonalities that would constitute the group’s individual experiences, cultures and beliefs. Once students uncovered the commonalities shared by their survivor group, digital IDs were created using ThingLink.com, Prezi.com, MovieMaker and Google Presentation tools.
