NOT4ME – 8320

Summary

“Recent studies show that 75 percent of youth between the ages of 12 and 20 are non-drinkers.”Source: http://wtvr.com/2013/08/27/not-4-me/ “. Your task is to produce a twenty (20) second Public Service Announcement (PSA) that should convey a clear message to the public about underage drinking and its consequences. Your PSA should help answer the following three important questions: What can you do to help promote safe driving among your peers? How has drinking and driving affected your community? Do you think there is evidence of drinking and driving in your community? This endeavor will be a multi step process where students will take charge of their learning in order to produce a product that has an impact in the classroom as well as in their community. Students will form self initiated groups after a brief lesson on the aspects of a good PSA. Students will research facts about underage drinking and driving collaboratively with the use of Google Docs and CiteLighter. Students will use Storyboard That to produce a draft of their PSA from which to work. The groups will then decide what video editing program they will use to create their PSA. Using self created video, copyright free images, copyright free sound and self recorded audio students will produce their PSA. Students will reflect on their PSA by self grading their work from provided rubrics for collaboration, research, storyboarding and PSA production. All PSAs are posted on the project website for students and community members to view and discuss. Students vote on the top two PSAs that will be submitted to the NOT4ME video challenge.

TIPC Ratings

Target
Students are given time to conduct research primarily through websites verifying facts by locating secondary sources providing the same information. Students use CiteLighter to help organize their information before sharing it in a collaborative Google Research Template. Facts are then discussed and the best ones are separated to use later in the creation of the PSA.

Target
Students form self selected groups based on introduction of the lesson provided by the instructor. Students divide up research and compile their findings on a shared Google doc where they discuss which facts are the most useful and powerful for their PSA. They must also work collaboratively to decide what their PSA will look like by Storyboarding together. Upon completion of their Storyboard students decide what video editing program they will use to make their PSA. Throughout this process students reflect on their work as a group by completing rubrics for each activity.

Approaching
Students are given the freedom to choose the correct digital tools, using provided resources to learn the tool and then use the tool to complete the task. Students justify their choices by completing rubrics which allow them to reflect on their choices. Students are given the freedom to select options not provided by the instructor as long as they are explained and justified.

Target
Students are assigned to design a PSA that persuades and moves their peers to understand the danger of underage drinking and driving. This is a real-life task that affects members of their community on a daily basis. Students were provided with the freedom to choose many different ways to accomplish this task.
