My Plate – 7122

Summary

Art and Physical education teamed up to teach students the importance of eating healthy. Students researched the best foods to eat, how to recognize these foods, create their own healthy plates, and share their newly found knowledge to younger peers.
In art class, students worked together in groups (pretending to be chefs) and used their knowledge of the five food groups to create 3-D ceramic plates of food meeting the “My Plate” criteria for balanced nutrition. They created meals based on special diets including vegetarian, gluten-free, dairy-free, and diabetic, then they shared their knowledge with a first grade class and displayed their projects at our “Family, Fun, Fitness, and Nutrition Night.” The purpose of this project was to help students learn about some of the health challenges facing children in our nation including childhood diabetes and food allergies/intolerances. We hope that this will encourage students to become more aware of other people with dietary restrictions and learn how to make wise food choices to improve their health. This lesson ties into our school theme: “Cooking Up Success.”
