Summary
During this lesson, students choose to write a poem about a topic that interests them. Students are placed in groups according to interest. Google Docs is utilized for the first time by students as they each contribute a stanza to the final poem.

TIPC Ratings
1 – Entry. This lesson was in the entry category due to the fact that students did not conduct research to complete this lesson. They knew about figurative language as a result of prior work in class. Resources were provided as students followed teacher instructions.
4 – Approaching. This lesson was about having students use a digital tool to develop collaboration skills. Students got into groups according to their own interests and assigned their own roles to get the project done. Students also have to reflect in the final portion about the challenges associated with digital collaboration and propose ways to meet those challenges.
2 – Developing. Students had to respond to a higher level, open-ended task in creating the poem. They applied digital tools to solve the problem of creating a fall poem in a collaborative way.
5 – Approaching. Students created an original poem related to a topic of their choice after completing a unit on poetry. They had to apply existing knowledge to create a poem. They also had to predict and question in order to make their stanza fit into the collaborative poem. The teacher modeled creativity and craftsmanship and designed a lesson giving opportunities for students to synthesize, collaborate, and apply critical thinking skills. Students created meaningful, original work within the assignment parameters.
