Second Grade Mapping Skills – 4169

Summary

This mapping skills lesson requires the students to apply real life skills to an authentic environment by using a Busch Gardens map to create a treasure hunt using cardinal/intermediate directions. The students will construct a treasure hunt using the legend and compass rose to navigate through the park. After their treasure hunt is complete, they will go on Google Earth and try to locate their treasure by walking the virtual tour through the park. They will trade their treasure hunts with other students to locate each other’s treasure in the park.

The students will communicate and collaborate with peers to design their treasure hunt through Busch Gardens. They will be engaged in meaningful communication while using Google Earth to find the location of their treasure. They will also collaborate when using their peer’s treasure hunt to locate their treasure in the park.

The students will be engaging in meaningful questioning, critical thinking, and problem solving when they are creating and writing their treasure hunts. They will reflect on their projects when they check their treasure hunts on the map by using Google Earth.

This lesson involves creativity and innovation. The students develop original ideas and are allowed to create unique ideas and products. This lesson provides a learning environment where students are engaged in creativity and innovation. They synthesize existing knowledge to create new ideas and products.
