What’s the Matter?

Summary

The student will participate in a matter investigation. This investigation will help deepen their understanding of the properties of matter, mass in matter, and that objects are made of one or more materials. Students will develp their own questions to answer through research. In order to make learning relevant, students will collect items in nature and from home to use througout our investigation. Students will work in cooperative groups to investigate the properties and mass of their selected items. The investigation will culminate with students taking pictures of an item using a proscope. Students will then select a software program in which to publish and present their procsope matter item with a riddle to include all properties and mass. Proscope matter riddles will be published on the classroom blog for students to comment on and try to solve.

TIPC Ratings

Approaching:
Students developed their own questions to guide research using the KWL. Students then applied research methods when choosing from a variety of resources (websites, tradebooks, encyclopedias, notes from experiment) to answer their questions. Teacher facilitates student research and models strategies to guide student research.

Approaching:
Effective communication was modeled for students before they embarked on their cooperative group investigation. Students communicated with audiences within and beyond the classroom by posting their work on our class blog as well as responding to comments made by parents, teachers, and other students. Students collaborated in order to produce the matter riddle which was a culmination of their investigation. These products were original works containing riddles for others to solve based on samples from nature as well as their daily lives. Teacher modeled a range of communication methods and technology tools as well as designing a challenge that promoted communication beyond the classroom. Teacher taught students how to collaborate purposefully without direct supervision.

Approaching:
Students used technology to work and independently solve problems as they used ProScopes to take pictures of relevant items and publish them using a group selected software program. Students engaged in open-ended learning experiences as they used data collected from the matter investigation to create a riddle for others to solve. The teacher guided and encouraged students to use appropriate resoures to solve problems as they had to select appropriate resources, tools, and computer programs in order to collect data and create riddles to be publish on the blog.

Approaching:
Students used existing knowledge to create matter riddles and publish this using a team selected software program. The teacher was a facilitator as students created cooperative team norms to assist them in collaborating and communicating during the matter investigation. These skills were needed as they has to work as a team to select items for the investigation, one item to use with the proscope, and select one program to publish their riddle.
