Real-life Inequalities – 5001

Summary

Students will understand that inequalities are a part of everyday life and re-create a specific example of how inequalities can be used to solve problems. Students will understand the key terms that make up an inequality such as: fewer than, at most, at least, greater than, etc. Students will be able to recognize key terms in and then solve for specific inequalities by creating their own examples and answering problems created by others in class.

This lesson scores approaching for both teacher and students. When students have completed the creation of their inequality individually they will then take on the role of the teacher and present it to the class using the Promethean Board and ActivEngage. The class will then solve the problem and respond using ActivEngage. The presenting student will explain the correct answer and discuss the solutions with the other students.

This lesson scores Ideal/Target for both teacher and students. The teacher has provided an opportunity for student to develop and demonstrate their understanding of Inequalities by having them create a real-world inequality, demonstrate their thinking on the creation of that example, create an application for that inequality, solve that application, and then present their question to the rest of the class taking on the “role” of teacher.

This lesson scored Approaching for both teacher and student. As the students create their individual inequalities, they demonstrate: critical thinking skills through the creation of the original inequality and follow-up question, communication skills through the use of ActivInspire and ActivEngage, and the final creation of an original work.
