Wilson Reading Using StoryBird – 4537

Summary

Students will use Wilson Reading Words magnet and card manipulatives, as well as sight words, to brainstorm a list of words they could use in their story. Then students will work collaboratively to create a digital story on Story Bird to showcase the words they have been studying. Upon completion, the teacher will upload the PDF of their story to the class blog to share with first grade students who could benefit from their story. Students will also complete video reflections on their product and process.

While students did have to have an understanding of the words they have been studying, research was not a major component of this lesson.

This lesson falls in the Ideal/Target range for Communication and Collaboration. The students worked in a small group to brainstorm their words and collaborate to build a digital story to highlight the words they had been studying. The students collaborated on the use of StoryBird to build their story and students had various roles and responsibilities throughout the project. The final product was shared on the class blog for younger students to benefit from. The students reflected on the product and process through a video reflection.

This lesson falls in the Developing range for Critical Thinking and Problem Solving. The students were tasked with incorporating their Wilson Words and sight words into a digital story. The students had to generate sentences that would be appropriate for the story using the words that they have been studying. This was a higher order task that required problem solving and cooperation to create the final product.

Students created meaningful, original works within the assignment parameters. They were creative in the way in which they combined the unrelated words that they had been studying into a cohesive digital story. They reflected on their final product through a video reflection.
