Summary
When am I ever going to use this? This is a common question in many Math classes today. Challenge your students to answer their own question. Have them sell the idea to the public that Math is important in our daily lives. Have them create an advertisement that will send others running to get hooked on Math.

6 – Ideal/Target – Students assemble and synthesize information from a variety of sources to include in their own final product. They use a variety of tools to display and interact with information. The must develop and answer several questions throughout the research process in order to come up with the best final product. Keyword searching was demonstrated. Students checked sources for authority and cited information in their final product.
Not observed – The focus of this lesson was not communication and collaboration. Students communicate in the final product, however, this is an independent practice activity.
6 – Ideal/Target – Students are challenge with an authentic task that is both rigorous and relevant. They must come up with the best solution to the problem of explaining and relating math skills. They select from a number of tools to think critically and justify problem-solving.
4 – Approaching – This math lesson has connections to other subjects and to the “real world.” Students can demonstrate learning through a variety of methods. They become the instructors and must come up with an innovative solution within the assignment rubric. Students have choice in the final product they will use. They synthesize research and apply critical thinking skills. However, communication and collaboration was not a focus for this lesson. Students did not analyze trends to determine effective methods to use when creating the product, so this lesson falls in the lower end of approaching.
