Freedom Project

Summary

This lesson was written for a smaller classroom of students, so the focus was not necessarily on group work. Students independently read an article in the program “TeenBiz” that made them want to know more about slavery. Students chose a famous slave in history, conducted research, and prepared a fake online profile to represent their figure. At the conclusion of the lesson, the profiles were shared with their class and with another class in a different location. Students came up with questions for the famous characters. Each student posed as his or her character on Skype as they were asked questions.

TIPC Ratings

7 – Ideal/Target: Students are engaged in thinking critically about information sources. Even though this is a shorter research lesson, they are asked to cite multiple sources. They have to assemble information from these varied sources into useful chunks for the online profile (display information). They are using keyword strategies that were modeled by the teacher.

0 – Not observed: This lesson did not focus on communication and collaboration, although it includes having students present to another classroom through a digital communication tool. Students worked independently to portray a character during the lesson.

4 – Approaching: This lesson was very challenging to students. They had to represent a character and make connections with another character. They formed questions to guide research and justified the use of the information in the online profile.

3 – Developing: Students used a digital tool to display information. They had to question, summarize, and make predictions about relationships to create the online profile. Their project had connections to many other subjects. Information was presented in a written manner, visually (videos), and verbally (from the teacher). The creation of an online profile was relevant for many students.
