Extreme Weather – 4000

Summary

Students will work in collaborative groups to research a chosen extreme weather condition using a variety of online/print resources. They will also have the opportunity to Skype with a local meteorologist to gather first-hand research. In addition, student groups will choose a product to showcase their expert knowledge of extreme weather with the class as well as blog about their experience.

Target/Ideal:
tudents are required to use a variety of resources – both print and online – to locate information about their chosen topic, answering questions that they themselves have written, which they must then synthesize to create a product of their choice.  The teacher facilitates the research by providing necessary instruction prior to the reserach taking place, and serving as a resource when needed while researching.

Target/Ideal:
Students are organizing group roles and establishing group norms within each group to accomplish the creation of a product of their choice.  They are participating in Skype sessions with a local weather expert to facilitate their research on the topic as well as reflecting on their daily group work and setting goals for improvement.  The teacher facilitates their work by putting structures in place to enable them to perform these tasks as well as serving as a resource as needed while they work. 

Target/Ideal:
The students must select their own tools for product creation and research. Students generate and respond to their own questions as well as justify their selections.  Students work independently as a group to accomplish the authentic task asked of them.  Students are required to reflect on their processes during daily work and set goals for improvment. The teacher facilitates their work by putting structures in place to enable them to perform these tasks as well as serving as a resource as needed while they work.

Approaching:
The students work to create an original, meaningful work within the parameters that they have been given.  They make predictions that inspire new solutions to an authentic task.  The teacher models risk-taking, creativity and craftsmanship throughout the process as well as designing a unique opportunity for students to synthesis resources, comunicate/collaborate, apply critical thinking skills and address an authentic task.
