Summary
Students will assume they have been asked by the American Olympic Association to design and create a web presentation that American students might use to learn all about the Olympics. To accomplish this task they will work in groups of four. Each member of the group will be required to play a role in order to gather and organize the information needed to build a project of Olympic caliber!
The purpose of this project is two-fold. The first goal is for students to learn more about the history of the Olympic Games and, in particular, the depth and scope of American involvement in both past and present day Olympic Games. The second goal is for students to take a risk and learn how to use a new web-based presentation tool. Each group will select a web-based program to use after investigating a variety of options using this wiki: http://cooltoolsforschools.wikispaces.com/ . Students will then serve as the resident expert in the class for one new program and then be exposed to other options by watching the final presentation.
TIPC Ratings
This lesson would be considered to be in the approaching level of this category because the teacher provided some selected Internet sites but also encouraged students to locate other appropriate Internet sites as well as use the library resources to assemble appropriate information. Students were responsible for following appropriate copyright rules and for citing all their resources in the correct citation format. Students also were also grouped by research topics and asked to upload their research to a Google Drive form so that they could evaluate the reliability of information found. By comparing answers to their common research questions, they were able to see if information found was consistent or if outliers existed.
This lesson would be considered to be in the ideal level of this category because it provides multiple opportunities for students to communicate and collaborate both digitally and in groups. Students were asked to upload all research to a Google Drive document so that it could be accessed and commented on by all group members. Students were required to select a web based program that would allow for multiple users to edit and create the presentation. They choose the web-based presentation tool of their choice which provided the entire class with opportunities to become familiar with various presentation options. The initial selection of the program also allowed for students to problem solve in their groups by learning to use a new program and problem solving together to reach solutions. Students were allowed to organize the assigned roles and responsibilities within the group. Daily, each student self-assessed and peer assessed each other on how well they worked in the group. Students completed a Google Drive form to evaluate their peers during group work time. (this rubric is included). Group/peer evaluations and group presentation evaluations were a part of the final assessment.
This lesson would be considered to be in the approaching level of this category because the teacher created opportunities for the students to problem solve in their groups through the use of group challenges each day as a warm up activity related to Olympic events. Each member of the group had to design and create their own portion of the project according to the individual roles, which would then be part of the group project. The group had to decide which web-based presentation tool would be the most appropriate for their group’s project and learn how to use a new program without instruction from the teacher.
This lesson would be considered to be in the approaching level of this category because each member of each group had a different role and was responsible for creating a portion of the project according to their role. The group decided which web-based presentation tool would be the most appropriate for their project and all portions of the project were included in the final product. By the end of the project, students were exposed to multiple tools which they will have access to for future projects.
