Summary

Students will work in design teams to compete for a design contract. The client is a mom and her toddler, who will be introduced through a video. Students have the opportunity to ask initial questions through a blog and will also talk with the client’s mother through Skype. The finished product will consist of a proposal, budget, 2-d sketch, and a 3-d or physical model of the room. The team will have a $10,000 budget.

TIPC Ratings

The teacher has designed a task that requires students to build questions to guide their investigation into solving the problem. Students have to utilize multiple resources to acquire and apply information. Students select their own resources throughout the project in order to address the task.

Students are collaborating with the client who works at another school via digital tools such as a blog and a webcam. The teacher is modeling a wide range of digital communication tools. Students work on an authentic task and collaborate without direct supervision throughout the lesson. Students are forming teams and roles in order to complete the task efficiently based upon group members’ individual strengths.

This lesson asks students to pull together a wide range of resources as they guide their own investigations into how to solve the task at hand. They must address a variety of restrictions, including the age group of the client, the dimensions of the room, and the budget. Students select the best tool to present their ideas to the client. At the end of the lesson, students are asked to reflect and set goals.

This lesson hits ideal in this category as students try to predict how their design might impact the client’s final decision. They are asked to create an innovative design that opens up the door to strategic risk-taking on their part. Students synthesize knowledge about a variety of concepts in completing a comprehensive design proposal. At the end of the lesson, they are asked to reflect on their innovativeness and set new goals.
