Summary

This lesson focused on students reading an entire novel in an hour.  The teacher showed the class the novel Sahara Special and asked the class how they could possible read an entire novel in one class period.  The teacher divided the class into groups where each group was assigned a specific chapter.  Chapters from the book were torn out of the book and passed out to each group where they added summaries to a classroom wiki.  By the end of the block the class will have compiled a classroom summary.

TIPC Ratings

Developing – Research and Information fluency was not the emphasis of this lesson. However, it was a good way to introduce the class to using Google Advanced Search researching the author.

Approaching – Students worked in cooperative groups to read their assigned chapter. Information was housed online through the use of a wiki. This lesson could have rated higher had the class utilized a Google doc while reading the chapter. This would allow for all participants in the group to be active members throughout the summarizing. Once the doc is completed they can cut and paste their findings in the wiki.

Developing – The teacher asked some higher order thinking questions. This could have scored higher had the teacher had the class generate some of those questions on her own.

Developing – Students were limited to the amount of choice they had in this lesson.
