Summary
During a 45 minute block, the students will break down several fraction word problems looking for key words and context clues to discover the appropriate operation. The next class the students will be placed in groups given an in depth fraction word problem and asked to show a picture representation as well as the mathematical approach of how they solved the problem. Students will be able to use a computer program of their choice to model their answers. Groups will then be asked to create their own fraction word problem using advanced mathematical terminology to share with the class. The groups will also have to provide the solution using a picture representation and mathematical equations. The students and the teacher will evaluate individual projects based on the teacher’s rubric. Upon completion, students will be able to compare their graded rubric with the teacher’s graded rubric and analyze potential for future growth.
TIPC Ratings
Entry (students are using context clues and key words which is a fundamental skill in research)
Developing (students are placed in teacher-selected groups with specific expectations to accomplish a group product)
Target (students are tasked to generate and respond to purposeful questions; students will have to justify their solutions using picture representations and mathematical responses; students will use digital tools to create their representations; teacher will facilitate the creation of problems through questioning and allow students an opportunity to reflect on their problem-solving practice)
Developing (students are allowed personal choice in generating their mathematical problems and are required to use previous knowledge and appropriate digital tools to create their final product)
