Summary

In this lesson the students will be exploring and learning about weather instruments. They will be given a weather instrument to research and design a model of this instrument. The students will be going on a web-quest and researching information in books provided. The pairs will be given a design challenge to design and create a model of their instrument. While the groups are working on their design challenge, I will have several of the groups using Blabberize. This will allow the student to make a picture of their instrument talk about the importance of recording and interpreting data. As groups are finishing up their design challenges and blabberize they will be working on the Promethean board with a virtual lab on Discovery Science making different kinds of weather using the variety of instruments as well as communicating and collaborating with a discussion topic on forecasting on our blog. Students will be presenting as explaining their instruments that they have created with the class and they will be able to comment and ask questions to each group. After all of the children have finished making their blabberize, they will be made into Quick-time movies, which will then be all put together for a Vimeo to be posted on the blog.

TIPC Ratings

Students will be researching about their instruments through websites provided by the teacher and a variety of weather books in the classroom. Students will use their web quest guide as they are searching for information. The students will be applying the information learned as they create their models. They will also be taking the information that they found and using it to explain the uses and importance of their instrument. Students will be introduced to the subject area through Discovery Science on the Promethean Board.

Each paired group will be given a Design Challenge/Children’s Engineering project to complete. They will be problem solving with each other to create a model of their instruments. They will be planning, designing and creating a replica of their instrument. Students will need to use a variety of critical thinking and 21st century skills to accomplish this Design Challenge. The students will be challenged during their process as problems arise and as they brainstorm multiple solutions. Student will be using a program on the computer called Blabberize to communicate their information that they have learned about their instrument.

Students will be creating a model of their instrument by using only the materials provided. The students will be constructing their models using an assortment of materials. They will use the information that they have learned about their instruments, to create the best possible model. They will be sharing their final projects while sharing their problems and solutions to their models to the whole class. Student will be encouraged to share their ideas and insights on each group’s final product.
