Summary
Today’s Math students often ask the question, “Why do I need to know this stuff?” To help the answer this question students in this Middle School Math class were asked to find math in everyday images. Then, using prior knowledge of systems of equations, students will create an equation that solves a real life problem based on an image of their choosing. They are responsible for explaining and presenting the problem using mathematical reasoning, connections and a representation medium of their choice.
TIPC Ratings
Teacher models strategies for finding real world examples of math through video clips. The students are responsible for coming up with their own examples using a plethora of resources. They will assemble this information to determine relevant examples.
The teacher designs the challenge of finding examples of math in real life. Students discover, through collaboration, how often math is used day to day. The students are responsible for delegating roles and finding pertinent information to make a cohesive digital project.
The teacher designs a compilation of video clips that display math examples. Students must determine where the math is taking place in each video. To move beyond that, students are then to find their own images using a wide variety of digital resources. They must decide collectively what material to use and how to combine it into a presentation that depicts the real-world math in the image they chose. Finally, students reflect on their learning by using the rubric to evaluate their own work and then discuss those understandings as a group.
Teacher models real world math examples through video clips. Students are to design their own presentation using critical thinking to find math in real life examples. Therefore, students create meaningful and original work, all pertaining to mathematical concepts.
