Capture it in a Capzle: Oceans and Seas

Submitted by: Sean Pratt

Summary

Rather than write a traditional research paper, students created an informational Capzle about a marine body of water.  Capzles are storylines made up of individual moments that would contain information, images, videos, or music, to present your material. The audience for this brochure was an avid world traveler and researcher. Each student was assigned a body of water but they put their research into one capzle per class. After their deadline, students had to answer questions based on their peers’ work.

TIPC Ratings

This lesson is developing in Research and Information Fluency. Students used a worksheet to guide their research. They responded to the class assignment that prompted analysis of information. Students had several questions to answer to complete the project and to reflect on it upon completion. There was little direct instruction as to search techniques, but there was direct instruction on some examples places to search.

This lesson is approaching in Communication and Collaboration. Mr. Pratt designed the assignment to address an authentic task and collaboration.  Students worked individually to create a capzle.  They then loaded their capzle as part of one large class capzle.  They were able to explore other products within their class capzle and beyond.  At this point in this class the group norming has taken place in previous classes. There was little direct supervision and students had the freedom to collaborate within and beyond the classroom through the digital tool.

This lesson is on the lower end of approaching for Critical Thinking and Problem Solving.  Students responded to higher order questions on the worksheet that were developed by Mr. Pratt.  They were able to justify their answers in the capzle.  Students applied their ability to solve open-ended tasks that required higher order thinking skills when creating the capzle.  Mr. Pratt supported the students as they engaged in the assignment and problems. A consideration for making this lesson higher in Critical Thinking Problem Solving would be to allow students to compose their own questions.

This lesson is developing in Creativity and Innovation.  Students worked on class assignments that blended technology and limited aspects of personal choice.  They were able to summarize and answer questions based on existing knowledge.  Mr. Pratt did include connections between subject matter and the new concept of capzles.
