Remember the Maine- Down with Spain!

Summary

This project based lesson is a summative assessment that allows the students to work collaboratively and simultaneously to create a Prezi canvass that measures their understanding of the causes of the Spanish American War and respond to the guiding question: “How can economic interests, the media and public opinion influence global decisions?” Students also relate the guiding question to events in the present time.

TIPC Ratings

Students use specific digital tools and other resources provided to assemble, evaluate andutilize information. Since this was a summative assessment, students were assigned a specific program to use to complete the project. Students utilize prior knowledge and / or teacher and peer support to find and evaluate resources and apply those skills. This was a summative assessment for a unit that was taught in class. Students were required to use research skills to complete the project. Students use information and resources to apply knowledge to real-world situations and accomplish real-world tasks. Students were required to use real-world tasks by working collaboratively and simultaneously with a group of students. Students were required to make connections between the events that caused the Spanish American War with real-world connections in 2010.

Students communicate ethically within and beyond the classroom in ways that produce
collaboration in real and non-real time. Students worked collaboratively and simultaneously to complete a Prezi project and respond to a guiding question in a School Space Discussion Forum. This project encouraged students to assume leadership responsibilities in order to successfully complete the project. Students share knowledge with their peers using appropriate resources. Students shared their
knowledge with their peers within the group and in classroom presentations.
Students form collaborative teams to solve real-world problems and/or create original works. Students worked together to use 21st century skills in creating an original work.

Critical Thinking Description
Students choose multiple resources to draw conclusions, based on clear patterns of evidence to produce new understandings. The students used their prior knowledge and current research to apply the guiding question to situations in the world today.
Students use resources to solve real-world problems and reflect on their product and their process. Students solved problems working collaboratively with a group of students. Students had to solve problems involving group dynamics and solve problems encountered within the group and mastering the new program. Students use prior research to develop and answer open-ended questions using higher order thinking skills. Students used prior research to answer the questions on the School Space Discussion Forum. They had to apply the guiding question to real-life situations in the world today.

Students apply critical thinking and research methods to create work containing elements of originality and teacher-defined requirements. Students were encouraged to be creative in their presentations in creating their paths and the selection of images. One student used the Paint program to create images instead of using found images.
Students work collaboratively to produce products that offer novel solutions to real-world problems. This product required the students to utilize real-world solutions because the students had to work collaboratively to solve problems they encountered while using the program. In the 21st century environment this is a valuable skill in solving real-world problems in real-time situations. Students assumed leadership roles to help their classmates. Students create innovative products that have value for specified audiences. Students used Prezi for the first time and this product was unique because all students were working on the product at the same time. Students were given the freedom to be as creative as they desired when completing this project.
