School: Varina High School

Summary

This unit focused on both historical instances of injustice and modern issues that need more attention. The unit is structured around the novels: The Diary of Anne Frank and Speak. The purpose of the project is to expose students to atrocities born from intolerance in the past and present. Through this exposure, students will then become researchers and activists for the cause that they feel most passionately about. The goal is to have the students become more tolerant at the most basic level and then speak up about a cause they believe is very important.

Their presentations were given in the library such that a variety of people were able to be a part of the audience. They had to practice effective communication in the classroom and to their audience.
