Cell Wars: Return of the Organelles

Submitted by: Shannon Smith
Collaborators: Joy McDonald, Kathy Richardson, Cathy Stone, Susan Gaskins.
School: Hungary Creek Middle School

Summary

The lesson combines numerous facets of technology with Life Science Standards of Learning. Students may use prior knowledge of cell parts or begin their research at a beginning level to learn about the structure and function of an assigned organelle. They will also compare the organelle with a common object to help remember its function. After completing their research, students will develop a video illustrating their organelle, its function, and what common object it resembles.

TIPC Ratings

Students use internet research sites and textbooks to research cell structure and function. They will also be asked to apply this knowledge to comparing their organelle to a common object.

Students use multimedia resources to demonstrate knowledge of subject matter and communicate those results within the classroom.

Students will use higher order thinking skills to fully illustrate an analogy of their organelle’s function through video communication. They will be prompted to use prior knowledge to answer research questions about cell structure and function. Students will also compare their research with one another to discuss and justify multiple conclusions as they work to solve their particular task.

Students create meaningful, innovative videos that compare a cell organelle’s function to another item (or system) of their choice. These works have great value to other Life Science students as they construct knowledge of cells.
