The Objectives of the Millennium

Summary

Summary: One of the main objectives of the AP Spanish class is to get students acquainted with authentic sources in the target language through thematic units that are studied across the academic year. This academic year, under the unit “Desafíos Globales” (Global Challenges), Godwin AP Spanish students, studied the United Nations’ summit of the year 2000, in which over 150 leaders from around the world met in New York to discuss and to establish which were the major problems of the world that needed priority in assistance. This meeting resulted in a plan of goals to be met in 2015, which is known as “The eight objectives of the Millennium”.

AP Spanish students, in groups of three, developed a project based on the research, analysis, evaluation and reflection of one of the objectives of the Millennium. After each group of students developed their own project during five class meetings, each group presented to the class their findings, analysis, evaluations and reflections on the particular problem. The presentations included Movies that used the Movie Maker program. Each presentation allowed opening discussions in the target language in which students of the class took notes, formed questions for the students presenting, asked these questions, and presenting groups answered these questions. Students also expressed their reactions to what had been presented and there was also a climate of exchanging knowledge, ideas and even personal experiences related to problems of the world.
