Sink or Float?

Summary

In this two-day 30 minute science kindergarten lesson, I wanted to tap into critical thinking skills, research, and creativity. I began by showing a teacher enhanced flip chart downloaded from promethean planet, to begin a collaborative discussion of items that sink and items that float. My students were then given the opportunity to examine various items to predict if the item would sink or float in a bucket of water. After their predictions, we watched a short video clip of the items being tested in a bucket of water. Following this viewing, students at each table were provided 3-4 items to drop in a small container of water. They were then given a worksheet assessment to complete, checking off on a chart if the item floated or sank.
On day two of this lesson, we revisited the flip chart, this time for a more detailed and in depth discussion of the concept. Students were placed in groups of 2-3 students to draw a picture of items that float and items that sink. Then together, we created another page the existing flip chart, creating an underwater picture, placing in it pictures and clips of things that float and sink. At the end of the lesson on day two, students would be directed to use activote* software for an immediate assessment of learning. We also created a video assessment in which my students were able to demonstrate their knowledge of what their chosen item would do in a bucket of water.
