Summary

This lesson is designed with layers that engage each student’s different learning style. It incorporates the use of concrete materials (construction paper and pictures of places that we will visit during our CBI’s) coupled with the use of innovative technology that has been designed to teach students about their community and engage them in what goes on in their community. Each week, students visit a business within their community when taking part in community based trips. (CBIs). Through the use of technology and other creative teaching methods, students create their own community and become part of an innovative discussion about the functional needs in our community. Students are engaged in the forward thinking process that demonstrate life skills and help students with exceptional needs face many of the challenges that they face in the community as well as learn what the community has to offer. This lesson focuses on basic functional needs as well as basic life skills that students may encounter in their community. For example: what store to visit to buy what items, or where to check out a book, plus sounds they may hear and transportation. Students communicate their answers by signing, using communication devices, verbal, and pointing.
