Famous American Fridays

Summary

Each week the class will work to research a Famous American and their contributions. The students will learn about citizens who worked to defend the basic principles that formed the foundation of a republican form of government. The citizens include: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Rosa Parks, Thurgood Marshall, Eleanor Roosevelt, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Cesar Chavez. The students will use prior knowledge to recall facts, then pair and share information with their peers. The student will read and demonstrate comprehension of nonfiction and comprehension of information from other print resources. The student will analyze the information and write a summary of the citizens’ contributions. The student will analyze the information and incorporate it into creating a 21st century project that shows the citizens’ background information and contributions. Students will create their project in one of the following ways: Comic Life, Tagxedo, Keynote, iMovie, Tableau, or oral biography report. They will evaluate other students’ projects and share knowledge through a class blog.

TIPC Ratings

Approaching: The class completed a KWL chart to guide their research. The teacher created video quests, as well as providing a variety of print and non-print resources for the students to use as they conducted their research on their famous American.


Approaching: Diverse groups of students will communicate and collaborate when sharing Think-Pair-Share information and through online blogging. Students initiate communication in real and non-real time through the class blog and Voice Thread containing student made examples. Students collaborate and solve real world problems and create original works when they perform tableaus about their Famous American with their group. They communicate information to the group during their biography report oral presentation. The students will collaborate with their family to gain knowledge of their life history for their autobiography.

Target: Students can choose from various 21st Century skill based projects for the planning and design of their projects. Students use technology to collaborate when they are choosing the design of their project. Students select which information is most important to be included in their project. Students ask and answer higher-level questions during the Learn part of the KWL process and during the online blogging. Students will solve real world problems and reflect on their process
by writing an autobiography including what contributions they plan to make to society.

Target: Students apply critical thinking skills and research methods to create original and group projects (tableau) which showcase learned knowledge of each Famous American. Students use various computer based programs and on line resources to research and create their projects. Students collaborate effectively with an audience beyond the classroom on the class blog website.
