Summary
This project was used as a culminating assessment after a unit on the importance of descriptive words, or adjectives, in writing. The students made a short electronic picture book using the web-based program “Bookr”. The students could choose the topic of their book, but were advised to create simple sentences, as the books were going to be read by children in younger grades. The students wrote short sentences with at least one descriptive word in each sentence. Short stories or picture books were then created on the computer and saved to our class blog.
TIPC Ratings
The students had to use their notes handed out earlier in class to edit their sentences. It was their responsibility to make sure they were using adjectives correctly in their sentences. The program Bookr is connected to the Flickr photo database, and children were guided to independently search for the photos they needed for their books.
The picture books were created in a manner so that younger students would be able to have the experience of accessing a blog and reading an electronic book.
The students had to use their knowledge on adjectives and basic computing skills to create their electronic books.
The students had the task to create a picture book with an adjective on each page, but it was up to them to decide what kind of book they would like to create. Some were able to write nonfiction stories, some wrote fictional fairy tales, while others wrote alphabet or number books.
