Artist Self Portrait Collage

Summary

After studying the life and work of Frida Kahlo, students, in teams of two, construct their own self portrait through a digital collage of pictures that depict their personal interests. Students use online query of images to obtain the pictures they need and then use digital photo tools to cut out and assemble the pictures into a composition. Students also continue to explore Frida Kahlo’s works by creating a digital collection of works and displaying student works in library for other students, as a digital art gallery. Students can also add the art in digital form as a gallery in the library.

This lesson is in the Approaching level of Research and Information Fluency.
This lesson requires students to research the life and works of a famous artist by selecting the most appropriate digital tools and information sources. The students will use a variety of digital tools for research and imagery evaluation and collection. Students then assemble and orginize the information based on challenges designed by the teacher to promote synthesis and reflection.

This lesson is in the Developing level of Communication and Collaboration. Students work with groups and alone to accomplish research goals. Students collaborate on a webquest, research completion, and project creation within the classroom. Works are displayed in the media center for hands on demonstation.


This lesson is in the Approaching level of Critical Thinking and Problem Solving.
Students respond to purposeful questions and apply digital tools to think critically about characteristics of their self portrait. The narrowing down of pertinent and useful information on such a famous artist encourages higher level thinking. Students think critically about the underlying message they wish to convey.


This lesson is in Approaching level of Creativity and Innovation.
This assignment was designed to provide many opportunities for students to synthesize research, communicate, collaborate, and apply critical thinking skills to examining their own self. Each project is unique because of the numerous experiences which are incorporated into the lesson. This lesson does not require predictions from students but does allow students to use new and existing knowledge to create meaningful, original work.
