Ridge Researchers Presents: Ancient China Experts

Summary

Students were asked to choose a topic on ancient China that interested them. They became “experts” on the topic by doing research. Working in pairs they shared their “expertise” by taking part in an interview on the “Ridge Researchers Show” (created in iMovie).

Developing
Students chose their topic discussed the research process and useful tools with the teacher. Students developed 4 questions they would like to answer about the chosen topic. They conducted research on their topics using a variety of electronic and print resources and the children’s search engine SweetSearch was introduced. After a discussion on how to find useful, reliable sites students chose appropriate websites and print resources that fulfilled their informational needs. They refined their questions and narrowed their focus.

Developing
Working with a partner of their choice, students used their information to create interview questions and they discussed the quality of their questions and answers. They consulted with their partner to refine their interview script and students completed a checklist to ensure they were ready to present their expertise. Students rehearsed their roles, refined their questions and answers and recorded their interviews.


Developing
Students used technological resources and collaboration to plan, design and execute effective and informative informational interviews.

Ideal/Target
The students applied prior knowledge and research skills to work in groups and think critically about what makes someone an “expert” in a field of study and translated their learning to a recorded video to be shared online.
