Tolerance: A Differentiated Unit Plan

Summary

This unit plan is focused on the Holocaust. One of the strongest aspects of this lesson is the focus on individualized learning contracts with students and the differentiation and creativity these contracts allows. The unit is structured around The Diary of Anne Frank and provides multiple opportunities for students to individualize their learning.

This project rates high on the TIP Chart: Ideal/Target. A number of activities in this unit allowed students to choose the focus of their research, use a variety of resources and then apply the information to create a variety of products. One strong example was activity two in which students had the option to research an additional incident of genocide and create a cyber hunt to educate their peers.

This lesson is relatively weak in the Communication and Collaboration strand, scoring in the Entry level. Students work is mainly done alone with some sharing of the final product. The teacher could raise this level by incorporating structures to facilitate online collaboration and to encourage group work.


This project allowed students to engage in a variety of open-ended learning experiences.

This project scores at the highest level of the TIP Chart for Creativity: Ideal/Target. It has a variety of aspects that allow students to create original work in ways that engage with an audience beyond the classroom.
