WEEK 6: 10/9-10/11

Wow! Another week in the books!

THIS WEEK IN READING:
4: Students worked on strategies to identify unknown words in the text using context clues. We discussed different strategies and started reading a History Mystery called “The Mary Celeste” that had a lot of challenging vocabulary for us to discuss. In small groups, we discussed how to restate the question when we are answering and to use evidence from the text. We will continue this next week!
5: We worked on character traits! Students worked to identify character traits of characters they already knew (Harry Potter and Darth Vader) while also looking at characters in our texts that they are getting to know. We focused on being able to back up those traits based on things the characters think, feel, say or do.

THIS WEEK IN WRITING:
4: We focused on subject/verb agreement and took a closer look at capitalization rules. I realized many of us were making mistakes about proper and common nouns and now we should be experts!
5: We focused on possessive nouns and contractions. Students worked to differentiate the difference between them and decide when and where an apostrophe was needed!

SOCIAL STUDIES
4: Students took a quiz covering the different native american groups and their locations and languages this week and they ROCKED IT! I am so proud of them. We had scheduled salt dough maps for today (Friday 10/12) to show off what we learned about the regions, rivers, and language groups so far but with the surprise weather interruption we will have to reschedule for next week!
5: We continued our research to prep us for our Henrico Project Proposal projects. Next week students will work as advertising executives working for Henrico County, who is trying to draw in new business. There are lots of great reasons to locate a business in Henrico, but they need help to showcase and convince the companies. They are trying to convince a new company to relocate their business to somewhere within the boundaries of Henrico.
