Week 6 Update

Another week of adventures in first grade has ended!

This week we studied Virginia symbols, practiced sorting in math, wrote about our favorite animals, and read some stellar books about bats. We practiced making more text to self connections and learned digraphs sh and wh and short vowel i.

I am really enjoying getting to know the students and working with them every day. They are already showing growth!

Week 5 Update

Hi Parents! This week flew by, and with the passing of the week, the hot days are finally over!
We started our Monday off with STEAM Day, which was a blast! The students loved working together to make an apple boat filled with pennies that floated! Thank you so much to the moms that stopped by to help out in the classroom! 😀

In math we learned about growing patterns and skip counting. We focused on autumn nonfiction books in whole group reading. We learned about American symbols and the Pledge of Allegiance in social studies, and we wrote and illustrated friend stories that we turned into a class book!

Our class won some special awards this week in their resource classes. They earned the most PAW points in first grade. Great job showing your PAW values not only in our classroom, but in others as well! Way to go!

To All Parent Volunteers/Chaperones: All parent volunteers or chaperones must be on this list . If you are not, and would like to volunteer for school events, field trips, etc, please go here for more information on becoming a Trevvett volunteer. Thank you!

Week 4 Update

We had a busy week of learning in first grade! I’m happy I have gotten to speak to so many of you during our back to school meetings! It’s so important to hear parents’ perspectives about their kids. As the teacher, I feel like I can better serve the children’s needs by knowing more about their lives outside of school, so thank you for speaking with me!

In math, we identified and created patterns; next week we will focus on extending and building more patterns. We read many lovely books by Kevin Henkes and made Text to Self connections to the stories, which allowed the students to better understand the texts. We taste tested three different types of apples, voted on our favorites, and graphed the results. The students practiced working together in teams to build a tower of cards and an apple stand out of paper, glue and popsicle sticks. They are ready to work as a team again on Monday’s STEAM Day. They will face their biggest challenge yet: building an apple boat and testing if it sinks or floats! The students practiced more writing and shared what they want to be when they grow up. Lots of aspiring teachers, police officers, and YouTubers in the class! 🙂

Week 3 Update!

Hello all! We finished week 3 of first grade on a happy note with Pete the Cat and Fun Friday!

We had a busy week of activities and lessons, but the children are making new friends left and right! In math we learned about the differences in shapes. We studied the patterns of seasons in science, specifically the fall season! We wrote our own stories about things we can do “all by ourselves”, and we continued our lessons and books on rhyming words.

Just a friendly reminder to please review the Virtual Back to School presentation linked here about first grade!  I hope that it will answer many questions you may have about this year. The last slide includes a link to sign up to chat with me about any questions you have. Thank you to those of you who have already scheduled a chat with me!I look forward to meeting with you!

Please be sure to check your child’s folder for their weekly grade report and paw check!  Please sign and return the paw check on Monday. There is also information about our upcoming STEAM Day on 9/30 and a permission form for students to receive a special Popsicle treat to thank families for signing up for a Back to School Chat.

Here’s what we are learning about next week.

Week 2 Update

We had another great week in first grade! 🙂

Thanks to the grandparents and special family members who joined us for Grandparents Day! It was wonderful to meet you all, and a great experience for the students.

The students are doing a terrific job of settling in to class routines and structures, which is an amazing thing for first graders! They truly are a special class!

This week, we practiced and talked about working collaboratively in reading and math stations, as well as how to stay focused during independent work. We made new friends in the class and made buddy venn diagrams together, as well as talked about being a good citizen and friend in social studies. We explored strategies for reading and focused on rhyming words.

We are good listeners in music class!

Please see the following information about our Individual Back to School:

NEW! We are not hosting a traditional Back to School Night this year. We are hoping to reach 100% of our families with our new individualized plan. The new plan offers the following:

-The traditional Back to School powerpoint is emailed in advance so that you can review it anytime, anywhere.

-Options to connect with the teacher via a conference at school, phone conference, classroom visit, virtual chat, etc.

-A flexible schedule to support working families and those with more than one student.

-Differentiation. You are driving the experience!  You decide what you want to know about the classroom and what we need to know about your student. This is discussed during the scheduled 15 minute session with the teacher.

A flyer will be sent home Monday.

Have a good weekend 🙂

First Week…Done!!

Parents, can I just say…WOW! Your children are all so amazing! 😀

It has been a very good first week for all of us here at Trevvett. We have been practicing class rules, routines, drills, you name it! The students have done splendidly during their first week of first grade.

This week, we mastered ordinal numbers in math. In social studies, we learned about good citizenship, helping our communities, Officer Buckle’s rules, and lunch monsters vs lunch friends (ask your child, they’ll tell you all about it!)

We started whole group and small group routines for reading block. We have been writing about things we like, how to be a good citizen, and practicing our first sight words of the year (me, see, and go).

By far, the students’ favorite activities are our brain breaks with Go Noodle. “Would you rather be a door or a window? Sand or dirt? Eagle or cheetah?” (There are lots of cheetahs in the class! :))

Thank you for supporting me in helping your child through this journey of education. I believe when parents, teachers and schools come together with common goals, the possibilities are endless!

Have a happy weekend!!

P.S. Please check the yellow folder for information on our Big Blast Fundraiser Pack for the school!

Welcome!

Hello Parents!

My name is Ms. Chung. I am very excited to begin the school year with you all, and I can’t wait to work with each and every one of your children this year! Their journeys through the wonderful world of education are just beginning, and I am proud to be their teacher, coach and friend in the next coming months.

Each week, I will be posting updates of our classroom and learning activities. Check back on Friday evenings to see all the great things we are learning and doing!

All the best,
