April 8 – 12, 2019

I hope that everyone has had an awesome Spring Break!  This is the beginning of the fourth nine weeks!  Relish every moment!  It will be gone before we know it!

MAPS testing starts this week with Reading on Thursday, April 11th.  Math MAPS will be given on Thursday, April 18th.  Please make sure that your student has a good night’s rest, a nutritious breakfast, and a stress-free morning.  Being on time will be key as well.  Our students have worked very hard this year!  They are ready to absolutely rock this test!

MATH

On Monday we will refresh our memories regarding everything perimeter, area, and volume.  They will have homework to help with this and then we will have a quiz on Tuesday, April 16th.  The students have a study guide and lots of notes in their notebooks.  Again, don’t forget the resources on this blog as well.  We will start practicing converting measurements.  The students will also complete a review IA that covers the entire year so far.  The Math MAPS test will be given on Thursday, April 18th.  We will be reviewing for this with homework and classwork.  Please remind your child that doing homework correctly is key.  They may call me with questions if needed.  Thanks so much for your support with this!

LANGUAGE ARTS

The Reading MAPS test will be given on Thursday, April 11th.  The students are ready to rock this test!  We will not have Word Trek this week due to this test.  The students will finish their Book Clubs this week.  Anything that is not completed in class will need to be done at home.   The skill focus this week will be cause and effect, identifying and explaining figurative language, and drawing conclusions.  We will also begin preparing for the Henrico County editing assessment.  The students will also work on creating a figurative language digital presentation as well as writing figurative language into a fairy tale with an activity called Princess Penelope.  We will also start our next novel study, The Phantom Tollbooth.  This is such a great novel with loads of figurative language, symbolism, and humor!

SCIENCE

Sound projects are due on Friday, April 12th.  We will review what we have learned about light already.   There will be a test on our light unit on Friday, April 12th.  The students have a study guide and lots of notes in their notebook to help prepare for this test.  We will also begin reviewing for the Science SOL.  The Science SOL will be given on Monday, May 6th so we need to kick our review into high gear!   The students will begin working on a study placemat that will cover all of the fourth grade and fifth grade content this week.  The placemat will count as two test grades, one for the fourth grade side and one for the fifth grade side.  The students will receive a rubric for this project.  We will work in class on this project along with hands-on activities for each unit.  This is a lot of material to cover.  The students will need to review and prepare at home as well.  Please encourage them to use the resources on this blog.  Thanks so much for your support with this!

SOCIAL STUDIES

We will begin exploring the Southwest Region this week!  The students will learn the states and capitals as well as the locations of each state.  We will look into the climate of the Southwest as well as learn the vocabulary of this region.  There will be a vocabulary quiz and a Quick Check Quiz combined as there is only 4 states in this region.  This quiz will be given on Wednesday, April 17th.
