Glance at a Golden Week (10.2-10.6)

Our time with Ms. Boyd is coming to a close and we have thoroughly enjoyed our time with her as she has been working towards getting her certification in teaching!  Her last day in our room will be Friday, October 20th. As a class, we have discussed ways that we would like to show our appreciation for the hard work that Ms. Boyd has put into our class. Students have been secretly working on writing letters of thanks for Ms. Boyd. As an extra special thanks, I would like to put together a movie treat bucket that Ms. Boyd can relax and enjoy! I have asked to students to pick out one movie treat that they think she will enjoy and I will supply to movies (Redbox gift cards). If you would like to contribute, please send in your item by Friday, October 13th.

In Reading, we finished our MAPs reading assessments! Yay! This will help me to monitor the students’ growth in reading comprehension throughout the year.

We continued discussing and practicing pulling out the main idea and supporting details in fictional text. The students also worked to draw conclusions from fictional text by adding together what the author told them and what they already know.

This week in Writing, the students cut apart words by their prefix, root, and suffix. This is a skill that will help them greatly on the SOL! We also began discussing contractions. The students created their own contractions to make up a bingo board for an engaging Contractions Bingo game!

In Social Studies, the students further explored our county of Henrico and started an open-book geography quiz on Henrico County that will be finished on Tuesday.

Be sure to visit Ms. Capano’s blog for more information on what we did in math and  science this week! Don’t forget to check out our photos to see us in action as well!

NEWS & REMINDERS

  • STEAM Day on Monday, 10/9: We are looking forward to our second STEAM Day!  Fifth graders will create ocean habitats, flood them with water and introduce oil to see how it affects the habitat.  Then, inspired by the BP Oil spill of 2010, we will investigate how to best clean up the oil.  Feel free to join us between 8:00 and 10:00 AM! We are so grateful for the generous supply donations! Thank you for all that you do to help make these fun learning experiences happen!
  • Interims: We have reached the half-way point of the first quarter.  Can you believe it?!  We do not send home interim reports, but we do encourage you to view your child’s grades in PowerSchool Parent Portal (link on left side of MTES homepage).
  • In folders:

    • Salt Dough: Yesterday, this letter was sent home about an upcoming ocean landform project on Friday, 10/13.  Each student will bring a bag of pre-made salt dough (see recipe on letter) that day to complete the project.  That way we can spend the entire class time creating our 3D maps!  Thanks for your support!  Want to come in and help?  Contact me!
    • Aquarium Field Trip: On Wednesday, a red letter was sent home about our aquarium field trip on November 2nd.  Please return the bottom of the first sheet, the entire HCPS permission form, and your $35 payment by October 12th.  Online payments, cash, and money orders are preferred.  We will announce chaperones on October 12th.
    • Picture Day!  Student photos will be taken on October 20th.  See order form for details.
  • Gifted Referrals:  The gifted referral window for students in grades 3-5 is open from October 9-27.  Referrals will be accepted from parents/guardians, professional educators, community members, peers and students during the appropriate referral window.  If you are interested in your student being referred, please submit your request in writing via email (subject:  Gifted Referral) or paper to Mrs. Rhoden, associate principal, during the above listed dates.  Please include:  student name, grade level, homeroom teacher, and area of referral (Language/English, Math, or General Intellect—both Language/English and Math).  For additional information, please visit the Parent Resources page on the Trevvett website (http://trevvett.henricoschools.us/).
