Dear families,
We have had a very sucessful and BUSY week in Fourth grade! A huge THANK YOU to you for your help with our African American Living Museum! The students wowed us at the PTA performance Tuesday night, and again as we presented to the Kindergarten and First graders. We had a great Young Scientist lesson that reviewed Solar System, and a fun STEAM Day lesson that allowed everyone to chew gum.
Next week we will have a more regularly scheduled week. We do have a field trip the Virginia Historical Society on Wednesday, March 7. We will leave Trevvett at 9 am and return by 11:45. This is a free trip but I do need a permission slip from each student so they can leave campus on a school bus.

The students will also have a vocabulary quiz on Friday, March 9. In Math we will continue our unit on measurement by learning about volume and capacity.
We will take our Virginia Studies test on the Civil War on Tuesday, March 6. In Science we will begin a unit on animals and ecosystems.

Dear Families,
We have had a great week in fourth grade! All of the students History Project presentations have been informative and entertaining. The students have worked so hard throughout the benchmark testing weeks and are looking forward to a regular daily schedule in the week to come.

You can help your child at home with this real world skill by pointing out cause and effect relationships in real life. We will have a weekly vocabulary quiz on Friday, March 2. In Math we will continue to study measurement. We will move on to measuring weight and mass for standard and metric systems. In Virginia Studies we will continue to learn about the Civil War, focusing on major battles, and the roles of Virginians. A test on Virginia Studies 7 a-c is tentatviely scheduled for Friday, March 2.
There are LOTS of reminders for next week as well. On Monday we will have our third of four Young Scientists lessons in the classroom. For your child to participate I will need a permission slip and $5. Last Wednesday your child received their recorder during music class. Please have them practice for five minutes a day. I know sometimes it can be painful to listen to but they will get better with practice. They have music in their take home folders to use. They need to bring their recorders to school every Wednesday until April 27 when we will perform for the PTA. Thank you for your help with this!
On Tuesday, February 27 our Fourth graders will be putting on a Living Wax Museum of their African American Achievers at 6 pm. We would like to know who will be able to attend. Thank you to those parents who have sent back the blue form already. I have included another intent form for you in their folder today. Please return it by Tuesday so we can know who will be attending.

Week of 2/5
Dear families,
We have had a great first week of the third nine weeks of fourth grade! We worked especially hard in Math to prepare for the Math semester benchmark test which is Tuesday and Wednesday, February 6 and 7. You may have wondered, why do the children have to take tests for two days?! The explanation at this level for Math is: the first day is all calculations and computations so they do not receive a calculator tool. On day two the students will have a calculator that they can use to help them solve the problems. I do not normally give homework over the weekend, but please take the time to have your child study their Math notebook. Thanks in advance!
After our benchmark tests in Math next week, we will begin a unit on patterns. Number patterns are particularly challenging in fourth grade and presented in all types of charts and graphs. In Reading we will be reviewing for the upcoming Virginia Studies benchmark using specific reading and skills activities. We will begin a new unit in Science on force, motion, and 4.2 energy. In addition the students will be receiving a lot of review material to make sure they are ready for the Virginia Studies benchmark that is coming up on February 13.
Parent teacher conferences are on Thursday, February 8 from 3-6:30 pm. Paper confirmations will come home on Monday but I will also email you your time so that you can access to it and add it to your calendar! I do not have any more slots available on Thursday but if you would like to schedule a conference with me please call Trevvett or email me!

Week of 1/30
Dear Families,
We have enjoyed our first five day week of 2018 together and completed many of the lessons that have been stretched throughout January. I am very pleased with the students’ book commercials! Please ask them to log into their google account to see the finished products.
The Trevvett faculty and staff are so excited to present to you Trevvett 2.0!! In your child’s folder there is a red half sheet of paper for you to complete after watching our video. If they return it in their communication folder they can win a prize!
Our History Project due dates are rapidly approaching. If your child hasn’t begun their research Mrs. Moseley has kindly added some resources to her blog. This project has a written part, a poster/creativity part, a presentation part, and a community part. On Tuesday, February 27 Trevvett is celebrating Black History Month with a special PTA event called “Blacks in Wax.” At this event we are encouraging the students to come dressed as their achiever and be ready to present the important information about their person as people come by and push a pretend button by their foot. We hope the children will get excited about this special activity and act like statues in a wax museum while they wait to be “activated” by their button. Please continue to let me know if you have any questions about their project! Thank you!
Next week in Reading we will be focusing on author’s purpose for fiction and how dialogue contributes to students’ understanding of what they read. We will receive new vocabulary words and they will be tested on them on Friday, February 2. In writing we will learn how to revise our writing by adding vivid language and specific word choices.
In Math we will begin our unit on Probability. In Science we will complete our unit on Earth, Sun, and Moon cycles and take a test on Friday, February 2.
Here is our updated benchmark testing schedule for the first semester:
Math: February 6 part 1 (no calculator), February 7 part 2 (calculator)
VA Studies: February 13
Reading: February 22 part 1, February 23 part 2
The students will have additional materials to study for their VA Studies benchmark test. Please continue to make sure that the children are reviewing their Race Card books.
Have a great weekend!
Week of 1/22
Dear Families,
I am so excited to get to see my students for a five day week next week! All of the snow, ice and frigid air are out of the forecast, at least for the next week of January.
Due to all of the instructional time that has been missed in January first semester benchmarks in all subject areas have been pushed back until the first full week of February. I will keep you up to date on this information as it becomes available to me.
Next week in Reading we will continue to work on self monitoring for comprehension through fix it up strategies.
In Writing we will complete our book commercials and have them typed online by Wednesday, January 24. In Math we will continue to cover fraction concepts. The students’ Math IA that was scheduled for 1-17 will now be given on 1-24.
In Virginia Studies we will complete our unit on VS6 a-c and take a test on Thursday, January 25. In Science we will begin a unit on Earth, Sun, and Moon by reviewing causes for day and night, seasons, phases of the moon, and tides.
Have a great weekend!
Week of 1/16/18
Dear families,
It has been a wintery start to 2018! I was so proud to see so many of my students working hard on their Math homework and completing it while they were out of school. I know that they are practicing their reading because of the outstanding improvement they showed on the Reading test they took on January 3!! You should be so proud of the growth your child is showing in their effort and interest in their own learning during fourth grade. I know that I am.
As the end of the nine weeks, and first semester, approaches on January 26th, we will be incorporating lots of review into our lessons. This week in Reading we will be focusing on “fix it up” strategies for reading comprehension. These include reread and read on, ask a question, make a connection, and use context clues to determine meaning. Please make sure that your student is reading for 20 minutes on every school night and recording it on their January reading log. This counts as a monthly participation grade. I have also told the students that studying for Science, Math, or VA Studies can count as their Reading log. The most important thing is that they are reading for an uninterrupted period of time. The students will receive new vocabulary words Tuesday, January 16 and have their weekly quiz on Friday. In Writing we will complete our book commercials focusing on fact and opinion, as well as the skill of completing two paragraphs. You can access your child’s writing by having them log into their google account from home by Friday, January 19.
January 19 is also our field trip to Saint John’s Church. Permission slips were sent home on Wednesday, January third and are due by January 18. We will leave Trevvett at 9:15 and be back in time for our regularly scheduled lunch time.
In Math we will continue our unit on fractions and mixed numbers. The students will have a cumulative Math IA on Wednesday, January 17. Look for their Math notebook to come home Tuesday. This week we will be focusing on equivalent fractions, improper fractions, mixed numbers, decimals and division. The students will have review homework to complete Tuesday night to help prepare for their test.
The students have been studying their Virginia Studies race cards (the bound booklet) for their second quiz and began taking the quizes on Schoology today. Please encourage your child to study as home as well. They will have three chances to take these quizes in class and pass with a 70% or better. The is a competition between the fourth grade classroom and designed to motivate the children all the information they learn this year in preparation for their SOL. In class we will complete our unit on the Constitution and Virginia’s contribution to our new nation. We are planning to test the end of this unit on Friday, January 19.
Finally, the students’ History Project information came home today. Each child has been assigned their own achiever and due date. Please sign and return your child’s coupon this Tuesday, January 16 for their first ten points toward a grade!
Our benchmark testing schedule is as follows:
Thursday January 25th – Reading Day 1
Friday January 26th – Reading Day 2
Friday February 2nd – VA Studies
February 6th – Math Day 1
February 7th – Math Day 2

Tuesday, January 16- History Project coupon due
Wednesday, January 17-Math IA/last day to take Race Card 2 quizes
Friday, January 19-Vocabulary quiz/St. John’s field trip/VS 6 test
Have a great weekend!!
Happy New Year 2018!
Dear families,
Thank you for your generous donations for our Winter celebration! The students made edible marshmallow snowmen and had a wonderful time!
Great news! The students will be able to access Study Island over Winter Break. If you are not familiar with the program, it is great for students to practice previously taught material at home. All you have to do is log in through clever.com for Henrico County and then use the student log in information that is located in the front of your child’s agenda. I have assigned a Reading and a Math activity for practice and told the students that if they pass both activities with a seventy or higher that I will give them five dojo points when they return to school in January!
When we come back to school on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 we will be learning about fact and opinion in Reading. The students will have a Reading test on Wednesday, January 3 and a Science Test on Solar System on Thursday, January 5.
In Math we will be studying fractions for the next three weeks. In VA Studies we will be learning about how the new nation of the United States of America formed the Constitution.
Please know that as long as the outdoor temperature is 32 degrees or warmer and it is not raining we will have outside recess. PLease make sure your child is dressed for the weather outdoors when they come to school. Our administration has asked that we do not allow students to go outside without proper outerwear. You can let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Upcoming events:
Wednesday, Jan. 3-Reading power test
Thursday, Jan. 4-Solar system unit test
Friday, Jan. 5-Vocabulary test

Dear families,
Next week will be an exciting week at Trevvett Elementary! The students will be looking forward to our Winter Break. I have planned some fun activities for us to enjoy, however, the students will need to continue to focus on learning. Please make sure that your child is working on completing their Bottle Buddy project that was assigned before Thanksgiving break. It is due on Thursday, December 14. Today the students have a planning form for the paragraph that they need to go with their project. Mrs. Moseley, our fabulous school librarian, has created a link on her web page for this American Revolution project.
Next week in Reading we will continue to learn about author’s purpose and how the setting, dialogue, and author’s word choice helps to convey the author’s intended message. The students will have a Reading Powerschool test on Wednesday, December 13 and a vocabulary quiz on eight words Thursday, December 14. In Math we will continue to practice long division. The students seem confused after a week of instruction so I will be sending home their notebooks for them to practice more long division problems. They will be taking a ten question quiz on Friday, December 15 on long division.
In Science we will continue to learn about the Solar System. The end of unit test will be postponed until 1-4-18, when we return from Winter Break.
On Friday, December 15 we will be celebrating the last day of school for 2017 with Pajama Day and a class party at 1 pm. I will be sending home information about this activity on Monday in the students’ folders!
