Week of September 19

Dear families,
What a nice group of students I have this year! This week we have started working together in small groups to complete Math and Reading activities. All of the children are doing an excellent job cooperating and using an inside voice. We will continue to practice listening to directions and completing the tasks that are assigned.
Next week in Reading we will learn about the strategy of asking and asking questions about what is read. The students will have a Word study test on Thursday, September 22 on the sort a/ar. In writing we will begin a unit on generating ideas for writing, and finish up with sentences and questions. In Math we will compare numbers through the 1,000’s place and round numbers to 10, 100, and 1,000 places. In Social Studies we will continue our unit of study on Civics with famous Americans and national holidays. A test in Social Studies is scheduled for Wednesday, September 28. The students will bring home their Social Studies notebooks next week to study their study guide to prepare for this test.
Next week the students will be taking the NWEA tests. They will take Reading on Wednesday, September 21 and Math Friday, September 23. These tests are taken on the computer and provide us with important information about what your child knows in these subject areas. There is no preparation necessary at home and they do not count toward your child’s grade.
As a reminder, students will write in their agendas every day. Please monitor their homework and record their daily reading for twenty minutes at the back of the agenda. The reading homework grid is due every Monday. This activity is their only written reading homework for the week.
