Notice from IBO: May 2020 Exams and Covid-19

23 March 2020

To our IB Students and Families,

The International Baccalaureate Organization has announced that the May examinations for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme and Career-related Programme will not be held this year due to the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic.

As an organization, it is critical for the IB to ensure that the options it provides its global community of IB World Schools are based on compassion and fairness for the difficult circumstances that its students and educators are experiencing. As a result, based on considerable advice from stakeholders across the globe, including schools, students, universities and official bodies, the IB has determined what it believes to be the most responsible and ethical way forward.

The May 2020 examinations as scheduled between 30 April and 22 May for Diploma Programme and Career-related Programme candidates will no longer be held.

Depending on what they registered for, the student will be awarded a Diploma or a Course Certificate which reflects their standard of work. This is based on student’s coursework and the established assessment expertise, rigor and quality control already built into the programmes.

We know parents and students will have many questions. The IB will share full details and FAQs with us and on their website by 27 March 2020.

For any other questions, please contact Priscilla Biddle at plbiddle@henrico.k12.va.us.

Thank you and stay well.

More Glory for the HHS Mock Trial Team!

From one of our Mock Trial Team Parents:

“I am writing to share some of the wonderful accomplishments of your Henrico High School Mock Trial team.

This group of then-sophomore students founded the club in 2018, and in their first year, they finished 5th and 7th in the state as result of their hard work and perseverance and dedicated coach. This is an incredible accomplishment for a new mock trial team.

They didn’t stop there. They applied for a national competition called Empire in New York, where you have to be invited to compete. Not only did they get accepted, but they also funded the trip by applying for and receiving an innovation grant from the Henrico Education Foundation—and they received the highest grant amount awarded for that year. The Foundation has been filming competitions and practices to use them as a model for their other grants and solicit additional donations for the Foundation. In addition, the coaches of the team that won the Empire competition (a team from California) were so impressed with the girls that he personally recommended and got my daughter, Christine Guarnieri, accepted to an elite 1 vs. 1 mock trial competition called Gladiator in California this summer.

Now, the teams have been working three or four days a week after school, 8 hours on every Saturday, and many Sundays to prepare for states after sweeping regionals (their three teams finished first, second, and third). They are a pocket of excellence at Henrico High School that should be celebrated. The club started with all IB students, but now it has participation from non-IB students as well. Last year there were two teams; this year there are three, and more students want to join.

The state competition is at the City of Richmond courthouse all day on March 21st  and 22nd. A number of Henrico students will also be volunteering to assist in running the competition. Henrico has a real shot at winning it all and going to the national competition in Indiana this year.”

GO TEAM!!!!!!!!!

DP Students Prepare for English Oral Commentary!

Our students are hard at work preparing for their English Oral Commentary that starts tomorrow and runs through the 24th!

Congratulations HHS Mock Trial Team!

Congratulations! The HEF Programs Committee has approved the grant–Henrico Mock Trial/Empire New York Competition–in the amount of $13,850. Your grant was the highest rated application in Cycle 1.  The board members were impressed with the high quality of the proposal and its potential to impact students.  We believe that academic competitions like this prepare students for college and beyond with high caliber life skills.

This is a significant investment in 11 Henrico HS IB students; because of this, HEF is asking that school leaders support this effort within the Henrico HS community and actively pursue opportunities for these students to share their experiences with other HCPS high school students.
