Weekly Update 10-18-19

Dear Families,

What a great week we have had. We began the week on Tuesday with a visit from the Richmond Ballet. The students enjoyed watching the ballet company’s version of Swan Lake.

In science, we have been learning all about fall. Luckily the weather has finally cooperated to truly feel like fall.

In math, the students have been learning how to count to 20. We have also been learning how to identify and write the numbers 1-10. Ask your child how high they can count.

In reading, the students have been learning to identify the beginning, middle and end of a story. We are also continuing to learn letters, sounds, and sight words. A great website for learning sight words is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCphZr-iwSk  The children love singing these songs in class. Just google this website and change the sight word to a word that your child is learning. Music is a great way for young children to learn.

We finished up our week with our trip to the Hanover Vegetable Farm. The students had a wonderful time. I would like to thank all of the parents and grandparents who showed up to help chaperone our trip. I could not have managed without you. My daughter, Taylor, came all the way from North Carolina to help us out.

Please enjoy these pictures from our trip:

Weekly Updates 10-4-19

Dear Families,

We started off our week with a Marvelous Monday full of STEAM!  Our students had an action packed morning filled with activities based around the story, “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom”.  We engineered our own “trees” using blocks, Popsicle sticks and magnetic letters.  We crafted our own trees adding coconuts with the letters in our names.  We went on a letter hunt through magazines to find EVERY letter in the alphabet.  And we used our 5 senses to explore a REAL coconut!  We had so much fun and we could not have done it without our AMAZING parent volunteers!  Thanks so much for taking time to come help out, we appreciate you!

We also had an APPLE-tastic time in kindergarten!  In Reading, we listened to fictional stories about apples and paused to make a prediction.  Our poem this week was “Way Up High in the Apple Tree”.  We learned about the letters /b/ /k/ and /o/, as well as the sight words “and” “the” and “in”.  In Math, we finished our unit on sorting objects by more than one attribute.  And in Science, we learned all about the life cycle of an apple tree!  We also sorted the apples that we brought from home and we made a recipe and cooked our own applesauce!

Next week, we will begin a unit on Community Helpers.  We would like to invite students to dress like their favorite community helper on Wednesday.  I can’t wait to see all of our helpers in action!

Today, our kindergartners brought home their first “Homework Activities” in their yellow daily folder.  The 3 components of our homework this year will include: an academic game, a reading log, and rainbow sight words. We encourage you to interact with your child and helping them learn through play.  Studies also show that reading to your child each night has clear cognitive benefits but it also strengthens children’s social, emotional, and character development. Learning high-frequency sight words is very important to your child’s ability to read fluently. Some words cannot be decoded easily, and your child should know them by sight – we call them sight words. This year we will refer to these words as our Rainbow Words. We encourage you to complete these activities with your child, to reinforce the learning that we do in class.  Let me know if you have any questions.

Weekly Update 9-27-19

Dear Families,

Fall is here!

We have had another great week! The children have adjusted and are following routines and rules of the classroom and school. They are eager to learn new letters, sounds, and sight words!

We have finished up the 5 senses and have talked a little about fall, although it doesn’t feel like it yet! Next week we will learn about APPLES and have many fun activities planned to do with apples. PLEASE send an APPLE to school on MONDAY!

We will continue sorting objects in math. We have sorted objects by color, size, and shape. The class was also sorted by boys and girls. Next week we will sort in other fun ways.

Monday, our half day, will also be our first STEAM day of the school year. Parent volunteers are invited to come help out with reading aloud, activities, and crafts from 8:00-9:30am. If you are able to volunteer your time, please let us know by filling out the STEAM Flyer that went home in daily folders.  We are going to have fun with the book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom! Students will listen to the story Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and engineer their own “trees”. We will also be creating a tree with the letters of our names, having a letter search and describing a real coconut using our 5 senses.. It will be lots of fun!

I sent home a flyer about Raz Kids today in your child’s folder.  This program is a great way to help your child with his/her reading skills. We have just started using the program in class this week. On the form you will see your child’s log in information for you to use this program at home. The students are excited about this computer program. A great way to start with your child is to have them click on the letters and sounds first. Then you can have them access the Level A leveled readers. The program will read the stories to your child first and they can follow along. Then your child can try and read the story themselves. By the end of the school year, you will be amazed at their reading progress. I think that you will enjoy this program as much as your child. This program is a great tool, but listening to a parent or grandparent read from a book itself is very beneficial as well. Please continue to read to your child too.

The students will be bringing home homework for the first time the week of October 7th. You will find your child’s homework in their yellow Trevvett folder.

Next week’s agenda:

Poem: “Way Up High In The Apple Tree”

Letters and sounds- B, O, K

Sight words- the, in, at

Predictions in stories

MATH- Sorting

SCIENCE- Apples-Life Cycle

Upcoming Events:

Monday, Sept. 30- Half day of school Dismissal-11:00

Friday, October 11-Picture day

Friday, October 18- Field trip to Hanover Vegetable Farm.  Thank you for sending in $9 and the permission slip. Thanks in advance to those who have offered to help chaperone. We only have room on the bus for 4 chaperones per class. If you are not selected to ride the bus, you can follow behind the bus in your car. I will send home a note next week, letting you know who can ride with us on the bus.

Weekly Update 9-6-19

Dear Families,

We had a wonderful first week of school. The students came in on Tuesday with all smiles. Our school’s motto this year is “Roaring With PAWsitivity.” The students have shown many great positive behaviors this week. In reading this week, we read a  book called “Pete the Cat Rocking in My School Shoes.” The children really loved this book. On Tuesday, we went on a tour of the school looking for Pete. We didn’t find Pete, but the students found several clues that he had left for us. We also learned about the letter “M” and words that begin with the “M” sound. In math, we learned how to count to 5. The students also enjoyed getting to use the various manipulatives that we use in math centers. In Social Studies, we learned about being a good citizen and our school rules. The class also attended our various resource classes which include: art, music, PE and library. For Fun Friday this week the students were able to make “Forky” from the movie “Toy Story Four.” The students enjoyed this project. I hope Forky made it home in one piece.

Welcome to Kindergarten!

Dear Families,

I am so excited to welcome you all to Trevvett. Kindergarten is a time of many firsts for your little ones. I am happy to be a part of their educational journey. Having three grown children of my own, I still remember how I felt the day that each one of them entered kindergarten for the first time.  It was an exciting time for our family. I was fortunate that my children we able to attend Trevvett with me. For that reason and many others, I have a special place in my heart for Trevvett. I will be reaching out to you very soon to set up a virtual conference to introduce myself to you and your child.  I look forward to our year together. Please enjoy the remainder of your summer.

Mrs. Smith  🙂
